Abstract:
The floodplain of the Lower Yellow River (LYR) serves the dual purpose of flood control and supporting residents’ production and livelihoods.Changes in land use within the floodplain reflect the interaction between natural environmental factors and human activities. These dynamic changes in land use have implications for flood control safety and the security of residents’ lives and properties. This study focuses on Landong Beach,a representative area along the LYR,to analyze the spatial-temporal evolution and transfer characteristics of land use from 1980 to 2020.To achieve this,an integrated land use index, diversity index, transfer matrix, kernel transfer diagram, and Logistic regression model were employed. The study also discusses the main factors influencing land use change in this floodplain. The results reveal that Landong Beach is primarily composed of farmland, water areas, and construction land, with a heterogeneous spatial distribution of land use.Between 1980 and 2020,the area of farmland and construction land increased by 26.10% and 64.11%,respectively,while the water area decreased by 44.28%.Prior to 2000,the primary transformation observed was the conversion from unused land to farmland, which accounted for 60.68% (20.12km
2) of the total unused land area. After 2000,the main transformation involved the conversion from water areas to farmland, comprising 48.45% (22.96km
2) of the total water area. From 2010 to 2020,the implementation of resident relocation and construction activities resulted in a 53.65% expansion of construction land near the embankment. The distance from the embankment proved to be an important factor influencing the distribution of water areas within the floodplain.Additionally, the Yellow River channel regulation project and floodplain management policies emerged as the main factors influencing the distribution of land use in this region. In the future,it will be necessary to explore new mechanisms for land use management planning in the floodplain, with considerations for flood control and safety,socio-economic development, and ecological protection, based on relevant policies. These efforts will help optimize the spatial layout of the floodplain.
